Privacy Policy

This policy covers two separate things: the app, which holds your financial data, and this website, which does not. They are worth keeping apart, because the answer is very different for each.
The short version
- Your transactions, accounts and categories are stored on your own device and are never sent to us.
- Using the app does not require an account, an email address or a sign-in of any kind.
- The only personal data this website collects is the email address you choose to give it.
- We use analytics cookies on the website, and you can decline them.
The app: your financial data
The app runs entirely in your browser, or on your device. It stores your ledger in a local database and makes no calls to a State of My Money server, because there is no server holding your data to call.
What that means in practice:
- We cannot see your transactions, balances, categories or notes.
- We cannot recover your ledger for you if a device is lost without a backup.
- We cannot restore or export your data on your behalf, because we do not have it.
Keeping a backup is therefore your responsibility. The app includes a backup export for exactly this reason.
The optional browser extension works alongside the app to pass a downloaded statement file to it. The file is handled locally; nothing is uploaded.
This website: what we collect
Email address
If you subscribe, we store the email address you enter, the optional first name you provide, and which form you used. We use it to send you the updates you asked for. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing removes you from the list.
We also derive two tags from the address for our own reporting: the email domain, and whether the domain is a consumer provider. This is a note to ourselves about the kind of audience we have. It does not restrict or change how your address is used.
Analytics and cookies
The website uses Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity to understand which pages are useful. These set cookies and report aggregate usage.
Where consent is required, analytics defaults to off and only turns on if you choose Accept in the cookie banner. If you choose Decline, or ignore the banner, no analytics cookies are set. You can change your mind at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser and reloading the page.
The app itself sets no analytics or advertising cookies. It does not run in the same context as the pages you are reading now.
Server logs
This site is served by Cloudflare, which processes requests on our behalf and keeps standard logs including IP addresses for security and to prevent abuse. Our email signup endpoint also applies short-lived, in-memory rate limiting keyed on IP address to blunt automated abuse; that count is not stored beyond the request window.

We use a small number of service providers, and only for the website:

We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it for advertising.
Your choices and rights
- Decline analytics. Use the cookie banner, or clear this site's browser data.
- Unsubscribe. Use the link in any email we send.
- Ask us to delete your email. Write to the address below and we will remove it.
Because we hold no financial data about you, there is nothing else on our side to access, correct or delete.
Children
This site and app are not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the date at the top will change with it. Material changes will be reflected here before they take effect.
